MORAL SHORT STORY

FORGIVENESS: THE ROYAL MANNERISM

''Forgiveness is an art and the wise man possesses it. It attracts people toward you. It appreciates your value. When you have this trait, you will be endured within. No one will be your enemy in the entire universe.''

William Arthur Ward rightly said, “A life lived without forgiveness is a prison.”

A story in this connection goes like this.

There was a Sufi Saint. A person came from a long-distance listening to his wisdom and desired to be his disciple.

The saint said, one condition is highly needed in my teaching. If you would agree, then I would proceed. The condition is, if you asked a single question in my teaching, I will stop teaching instantly. The man agreed to the saint’s condition.

Saint said, now strip off all your cloth and put on mine with an alms bowl in hand. He also handed over a sweet packet. Now you go and beg in this town. He also warned him, stone pelters to beggars are common in town. If someone pelts you with a stone, you must welcome him with these sweets. The man agreed to the weird condition of the saint and go with the alms bowl in hand.

In the evening, the man returned with a great sense of respect and said, “O wised Man, you are my real teacher.”

The saint asked, what happened? The man replied I am impressed with your teaching. I practically experienced and learned out of it. I realized today the power of forgiveness.

The man, who pelted me a stone, was expecting retaliation from my side. when I gave him a sweet in his mouth, he could not believe it. He hugged me with a great sense of repentance for his action.

I am inclined to your teaching technique. One thing I got clear from today is that we cannot control others through our words and action. In reality, self-control is needed for making our life more prosperous and contented.  Real teaching changes the way we live. It can alter the lifestyle of a person. I found this uniqueness in your teaching. I appeal to other saints to follow your techniques in transforming others.
